Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel promised up to six new summer signings by Todd Boehly and co.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been promised up to six new arrivals this summer as the Blues prepare themselves for a massive squad overhaul.

According to the Telegraph (subscription required), Tuchel has had held discussions with co-owner and interim Sporting Director Todd Boehly, and other key personnel, to finalise Chelsea’s transfer plans for the summer.

It is believed that Tuchel will be allowed a transfer kitty of £200 million – a number which could rise after taking into account income from player sales. The Blues are open to entertaining offers for the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner.

Thomas Tuchel has been promised up to six new arrivals this summer.

Six new players don’t sound surprising at all, given that Chelsea will need to recruit two of those arrivals in defence alone to address the void left behind by Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Tuchel has however emphasised the need for a larger squad due to the five-substitutes rule, so mass arrival may not necessarily come at the expense of mass departure.

The Blues have already negotiated a loan exit with Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku and that is expected to be made official next week.

A massive summer for Chelsea

The transfer window has the potential to either make or break Chelsea’s season. It is believed that Champions League qualification is the minimum target the Boehly-Clearlake administration have set for next season.

Lukaku’s departure may not lead to the club signing an out-and-out striker, with attackers like Raheem Sterling, Ousmane Dembele, Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus being considered.

The Blues have also shown interest in Leeds United star Raphinha, but any deal for the Brazilian is likely to cost a hefty premium.

Should Chelsea be successful in acquiring the six players that the new ownership has promised, expectations will be sky high on Tuchel and his side to deliver more than just Champions League qualification. Expectations need to be managed, and we will have a clearer picture in a couple of months’ time.
