Lamine Yamal’s meteoric rise through the ranks of La Masia is well-documented, but a lesser-known aspect of his development involves a role that feels almost unimaginable today—left-back.

According to a report from SPORT, penned by journalist Jaume Marcet, the teenage prodigy spent a significant portion of his formative years playing in a defensive role within Barcelona’s famous youth setup.

During his early years at La Masia, particularly in the 3-2-1 system commonly employed in 7-a-side football, Yamal often found himself operating as a left-back.

Though now celebrated for his attacking brilliance, his journey began in a role focused on discipline, awareness, and defensive contribution.

Alternating between left-back and centre-forward, Yamal showcased a remarkable ability to adapt to contrasting roles on the pitch.

Starting as a left-back

Under the guidance of his first coach, David Sanchez, in the prebenjamin category during the 2014-15 season, Yamal made an immediate impact.

His debut match for Barcelona on October 5, 2014, saw him score twice in a 3-2 victory over Don Bosco.

The unique demands of the 7-a-side system meant Yamal’s versatility was tested early on. In that format, the number ‘5’ represents the left-back, while ‘7’ is reserved for the centre-forward.

Despite the defensive responsibility tied to his role, Yamal’s natural creativity and dribbling ability allowed him to shine.

Whether tasked with making overlapping runs or providing precise crosses and penetrating passes, his talent was undeniable.

Spotting the talent

Barcelona’s coaching staff quickly recognised that his true potential lay further forward. Yet, his time at left-back was far from wasted.

It allowed him to cultivate an expansive understanding of the game, sharpening his vision, spatial awareness, and decision-making.

Today, Yamal is celebrated as a dynamic attacker who excels as a winger or even as a false nine. His early experiences as a left-back, however, have provided him with a broader footballing education.

While it is unlikely that Yamal will ever be deployed as a full-back again, his past in that role has undoubtedly shaped the player he has become.
