Report: Antoine Griezmann has four possible transfer destinations

The 2021/22 campaign is less than a month away. And clubs are working hard to get their transfer business done and dusted in order to be in the best shape possible for the start of the season.

The same goes for Barcelona as well, who made for quickfire signings earlier in the summer but have since been focusing on player exits. Given their precarious financial situation, any more incomings will only be possible if some of the highest earners are offloaded – the same reason due to which Lionel Messi’s re-signing is also being held up.

Antoine Griezmann is one such player that the Catalans are ardently looking to ship off this summer, in order to create room on their wage bill. The Frenchman has been with Barcelona for two years but has not tasted the kind of success that was expected.

Given his monstrous wages and his standing within the team, it makes sense for the Blaugrana to identify him as a disposable asset. And while his world-class standing means there are clubs interested, the financial aspects of the transfer are holding the suitors behind.

Nonetheless, things could speed up in the coming weeks with regard to Griezmann’s future and here are four clubs where the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner could end up this summer.

Atletico Madrid

A club close to Griezmann’s heart, a return to Atletico Madrid is being mooted for quite some time now. A swap deal involving the Frenchman and midfielder Saul Niguez was on the cards briefly but talks hit a brick wall on that front, leaving the operation dead in the water, at least for now.

Griezmann, for one, wants to return to Atletico if he were to leave Barcelona. Furthermore, Los Rojiblancos manager Diego Simeone has also indicated that his team are in the market for a new forward.

Chelsea

One of the few clubs which can afford Griezmann’s massive wages and any transfer fee that Barcelona may demand in the current financial climes, Chelsea are in the market for a new forward, with Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski being linked heavily.

But with a move for Haaland difficult and Lewandowski not getting any younger, Griezmann could present himself as an alternative for the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League winners. With both Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham staring at uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge, the Barcelona star may well be an option that Thomas Tuchel considers.

Manchester City

A club that has been long-linked with Griezmann this summer, Manchester City are said to have held talks with Barcelona over a player-exchange deal involving several stars, but negotiations did not prove fruitful.

Pep Guardiola is looking to replace Sergio Aguero, who has ended up at Camp Nou on a free transfer. Harry Kane is the Cityzens’ primary transfer target but could cost €190 million, which might force them to look at alternatives such as Griezmann.

Juventus

A transfer that would hinge on the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus will need to get rid of the Portuguese’s massive €60 million wages in order to make room for any big-money arrival. Nonetheless, recent reports have seen him get linked with a move to PSG, which could open up a window of opportunity.

With Paulo Dybala also in the final year of his contract in Turin, the Bianconeri could certainly use a marquee addition like Griezmann to their frontline. Although, as iterated earlier, it will all depend on what Ronaldo decides.
