Stade Rennais are pushing to sign BSC Young Boys midfielder Fabian Rieder (21), according to a report from Foot Mercato this Saturday.

The ambitious Ligue 1 side are in the market for a midfielder to compensate for Lovro Majer’s departure to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. During his pre-game press conference on Friday, manager Bruno Genesio revealed that Rennes will sign a player, “maybe a midfielder“, before the end of the transfer window.

Foot Mercato understands that Les Rouge et Noir are trying to lure the 21-year-old BSC Young Boys playmaker. Rieder was part of the Switzerland squad that took part in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The BSC Youth product is considered one of Switzerland’s brightest prospects. Despite his young age, Rieder has logged nine goals and 11 assists in 41 games played with the Bern-based team this past campaign. He picked up where he left off and has already one goal and one assist in three Switzerland Super League games.

The outlet adds that Rieder’s signing is seen as a priority by Rennes’ hierarchy. With the departures of Lesley Ugochukwu, Jérémy Doku and Majer, Rennes have raised up more than €120m in players’ sales, so it should not be an issue for Rennes to match BSC Young Boys’ valuation of Rieder.
