Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer (25) is set to join Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano.
The Croatian international was expected to move on after a disappointing second season in Brittany. The 25-year-old gradually lost his place in Bruno Genesio’s starting XI. Majer came off the bench last Sunday in Rennes’ 5-1 thrashing of FC Metz.
Romano adds that Les Bretons and Wolfsburg agreed upon a total transfer package of €35m including €5m worth of add-ons. The Italian reporter reports that Majer’s transfer to Wolfsburg would be the second most expansive signing in the history of the club after Julian Draxler. He is set to sign a five-year deal and fly from Rennes to Wolfsburg this afternoon.
Romano understands that Rennes’ deal with Wolfsburg includes a sell-on clause worth 15% of the Croatian’s eventual sale. Majer’s Rennes contract was set to expire in 2027. Les Rouge et Noir bought the Croatian two years ago from Dinamo Zagreb in a €12m deal. In 79 games played with Bruno Genesio’s side, Majer logged nine goals and 16 assists. It remains to be seen whether Rennes will dip into the market for an attacking midfielder once Majer part ways with the Ligue 1 leaders.
