According to Foot Mercato, Stade Rennais full-back Lorenz Assignon (23) is set to join Premier League side Burnley on loan until the end of the season.
Assignon was the apparent heir to Hamari Traoré’s right-back berth at Rennes, after the former captain left in the summer, however, in recent weeks, he has fallen down the pecking order. At the age of 23, the Frenchman is not happy with simply being a backup option, and as a result, he has been looking to depart Roazhon Park before the closure of the window.
However, Rennes’ initial €10m asking price proved prohibitive, and was enough to deter interest from Bournemouth. Olympique de Marseille were also interested in Assignon, however, the DNCG did not give the green light to the deal. Galatasaray, who were in the market for a replacement for Bayern Munich’s Sacha Boey, also pulled out of the race.
It had looked as if Assignon would remain with Les Rennais until the end of the season, however, Burnley have now swooped in to quickly secure a deal. The Frenchman, who is in Paris, is set to fly to the UK imminently in order to complete the move to Vincent Kompany’s side. It will be a loan deal with the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
