Speaking during Canal+‘s Jour de Foot programme today, former Olympique Lyonnais recrutement head Bruno Cheyrou has denied that he has been in talks to take over the sporting director role at Stade Rennais, but says he would be interested in the job.
L’Équipe previously reported that Cheyrou is a serious candidate to replace Florian Maurice at the Breton club, after coming under fire following Stade Rennais’ non-qualification in Europe for the first time in six seasons.
“I read it [rumours of talks with Rennes] as you did,” said the former midfielder, who spent four years with Rennes. “I’ve been reminded of it, I’ve been sent a lot of messages, but at the moment I’ve had absolutely no contact with Stade Rennais, its directors or anyone else.
“I really prefer to be very clear and transparent about this. The newspapers are sometimes better informed than the people concerned. But for the moment, officially, I’ve had absolutely no contact.”
Despite this clarification, he makes no secret of his interest in the job. “I have far too much respect for the people in place to start making plans. I played for Stade Rennais and it’s a club with a pretty interesting project. I think most people would be interested in having this type of position.”
