Andreas Pereira enjoyed a goalscoring debut as Flamengo’s push for a third consecutive Brasileirão title gained further momentum at Santos on Saturday.

Gabriel Barbosa grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick at the Estádio Urbano Caldeira, but Pereira also made his mark as a late substitute.

The 25-year-old, who has just joined the Rubro-Negro on loan from Manchester United, latched to a sloppy pass before putting the finishing touch to a superb performance by his new team.

“It went well. A player we knew, he has a lot of quality, he’s a boy, he’s dying to have space on the team, like the others,” Flamengo manager Renato Gaúcho said of the once-capped Brazil international.

“He came from a pre-season. I talked to him before the trip to Porto Alegre (for the midweek Copa do Brasil quarter-final win over Grêmio).

“He said it was interesting for him to travel with the group to get to know the way Flamengo plays, interact with his team-mates and, as far as possible, an opportunity would appear for him.”

With the international break now upon us, Pereira will have some further time to get settled with the Mengão before their league clash with Palmeiras on Saturday week.
