Real Madrid is a cup-winning team because they know how to win, something that has become a habit since they lost to Boca Juniors at the beginning of the century.
The Xeneize, who featured Argentine legend Juan Román Riquelme, were the last side to beat Real Madrid in an international final before Atlético Madrid defeated Los Blancos in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
In the 2000 Intercontinental Cup, a now-defunct competition in which the winners of the Champions League and Copa Libertadores played each other in a one-off final, Boca Juniors came out 2-1 winners over Real Madrid in Tokyo, Japan.
Martín Palermo scored twice within the first five minutes, which was enough for the Argentinians to hold on despite a Roberto Carlos goal in the 11th minute.
Since Boca Juniors’ historic triumph, Real Madrid have won five Champions Leagues, one Intercontinental Cup, three Club World Cups and four European Super Cups, a whopping 13 international titles in-between defeats.
