An eventful season of Premier League football has reached an end with the division’s annual awards now being handed out, title-winning Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson named as the FWA Footballer of the Year and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy sealing a maiden Golden Boot.

Individual accolades are always greatly received by Premier League players and whilst the league’s monthly award may not carry quite the same prestige, it’s still a fine acknowledgement of any player’s rich run of form.

We’ve decided to look back at the campaign’s award winners, remembering every Player of the Month from the 2019/20 Premier League season:

August – Teemu Pukki (Norwich)

Norwich arrived in the Premier League amid great expectations after sealing the second tier title, and the newly-promoted side won plaudits despite an opening fixture thrashing at eventual champions Liverpool.

Key to their early brand of attacking play was the form of Finnish forward Pukki, the star stepping up seamlessly after being named as the Championship’s Player of the Season for the 2018/19 campaign.

It was a Pukki party in the opening weeks of the season as the forward netted in defeat at Anfield, before getting Norwich’s Premier League campaign up and running with a clinical hat-trick in victory over Newcastle.

The Finland international made it five goals in just three fixtures after scoring in a thrilling 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Carrow Road, his early exploits seeing Pukki named as August’s Player of the Month.

September – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal)

September’s accolade was won by Arsenal talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the forward hitting top form to score in each of the Gunners’ four Premier League fixtures throughout the month.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner scored a vital equaliser as Arsenal came from two down to secure a draw in a pulsating north London derby at the Emirates, before scoring a brace in another 2-2 draw at Watford as Unai Emery’s side imploded at Vicarage Road.

Aubameyang’s late winner in a thriller against Aston Villa was followed by another goal to seal a point at Manchester United, the Gabon international further cementing his position as one of the most feared forwards in English football.

October – Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

Jamie Vardy another fine individual campaign to finish as the Premier League’s leading scorer for the first time in his career, his 23-goal haul boosted by a run of four goals in three fixtures during October – a purple patch which delivered the Foxes’ forward the division’s Player of the Month accolade.

Vardy’s first game of the month saw him fail to score as Leicester fell to a dramatic late defeat at Liverpool, before scoring his side’s second as Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to winning ways with 2-1 win over Burnley at the King Power Stadium.

The best was yet to come, however, as Vardy helped himself to a hat-trick in Leicester’s 9-0 in at Southampton – equalling the division’s biggest ever winning margin and setting a new record for the biggest away victory in Premier League history.

November – Sadio Mane (Liverpool)

Liverpool’s long wait for a Premier League title finally came to an end during a record-breaking season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with fewer players of greater importance to the Reds success than Sadio Mane.

Mane was named as November’s Player of the Month after helping Liverpool to four successive victories, establishing an eight-point advantage at the top of the division – a lead they would fail to surrender as they secured the title with a record seven games to spare.

The Senegalese forward scored a dramatic late winner to seal a comeback victory against Aston Villa, before scoring the crucial third as title rivals Manchester City were beaten 3-1 at Anfield in a defining clash.

Mane scored again to seal three more points on the road at Crystal Palace, before playing his part in victory over Brighton as Klopp’s side took control of the title race.

December – Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Back-to-back wins for Liverpool in the Premier League’s monthly awards, Trent Alexander-Arnold scooping the division’s Player of the Month accolade for December.

The full-back played a crucial role as the Reds overcame a congested fixture list – including nine fixtures in all competitions – to cement themselves as the favourites to secure the title.

Amongst the club’s victories included a 5-2 thrashing of Everton in the Merseyside derby, before comfortable victories over both Bournemouth and Watford. Alexander-Arnold’s best performance came as the protagonist of a 4-0 win at nearest challengers Leicester, however, the 21-year-old scoring once and providing two assists during a statement display at the King Power Stadium.

January – Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

Sergio Aguero became the first player in Premier League history to win the division’s monthly award seven times following a prolific start to the New Year, the Manchester City star’s seventh award taking him one clear of Steven Gerrard and Harry Kane.

Aguero scored six times and provided one assist in just three appearances throughout the month, becoming the Premier League’s all-time leading non-English scorer with a hat-trick against Aston Villa.

That treble also saw Aguero eclipse Alan Shearer for the most ever Premier League hat-tricks with 12, the Argentine creating yet more history during his record-breaking career at the Etihad.

February – Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Manchester United‘s season was transformed following the winter window arrival of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon, the Portugal international making an immediate impact to spark the club’s run towards the Champions League places.

Fernandes scored once and provided two assists as the Red Devils secured vital wins against both Chelsea and Watford, in addition to a goalless draw with Wolves during the midfielder’s debut in English football.

The 25-year-old swiftly established himself as the club’s chief creative threat as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side bounced back from a difficult period following the turn of the New Year, Fernandes’ impressive start to life at Old Trafford rewarded with February’s Player of the Month award.

June – Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Fernandes became just the seventh player to win the Premier League’s Player of the Month in successive months, albeit with a three-month hiatus to the season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Portuguese’s influence on Manchester United was once again evident as he scored four times, netting a double against Brighton and a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham. Fernandes also scored against Everton, with performances from the first half of March taken into account when naming the month’s finest player.

The 25-year-old joined Mohamed Salah, Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dennis Bergkamp and Robbie Fowler in winning successive accolades, whilst he also claimed the league’s Goal of the Month accolade for his brilliant counter-attacking effort at Brighton.

July – Michail Antonio (West Ham)

The final monthly accolade went to West Ham’s Michail Antonio, the midfielder going goal-crazy after a switch to a centre-forward role to fire the Hammers to Premier League safety.

Antonio netted a barely believable eight goals throughout the month to fire David Moyes’ side clear of the division’s bottom three, including netting a sensational four-goal haul in a 4-0 thumping of Norwich at Carrow Road.

The season’s delayed conclusion means Antonio is the first ever July Player of the Month, whilst he became the fifth West Ham player to take the honour and the first since Diafra Sakho scooped the prize in October 2014.

Antonio has been deployed in a variety of positions since signing from Sheffield Wednesday five years ago, but will now be hoping to continue his career-best form having been rejuvenated as the focal point of the West Ham attack.
