Real Madrid’s three-match winless streak in LaLiga came to an end when they won at Sevilla on Saturday.
An own goal from Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou in the second half proved to be the difference between the two sides at the Sánchez Pizjuán.
Madrid almost took the lead after just one minute when Lucas Vázquez picked out Vinícius Júnior at the near post, but the Brazilian’s effort from a tight angle went just wide.
The away side then almost scored in bizarre fashion in the fifth minute. An attempted clearance from Bounou came back off Vinícius and would have gone in were it not for a goal-line clearance from Diego Carlos.
Toni Kroos had a good chance to break the deadlock after 21 minutes but his curling effort flew just wide of the top corner.
Sevilla then had an opportunity to score early in the second half, but Luuk De Jong’s overheard kick was saved comfortably by Thibaut Courtois.
And the goal did come a few minutes later, when Ferland Mendy found Vinícius with a cross into the box and the ball deflected off Bounou and into the net for an own goal.
Nemanja Gudelj had a chance to equalise for Sevilla with 15 minutes remaining, but his free-kick went just wide of the post.
Suso then also went close when he dribbled past two Madrid defenders before bending his effort just past the upright.
And Courtois was forced to make a good save in the 86th minute from Lucas Ocampos’s overhead kick following a corner whipped into the box.
This result moves Los Blancos up to third in LaLiga, whereas Sevilla remain in 5th.
