The contrasting performances of Inter striker Lautaro Martinez and his AC Milan counterpart Olivier Giroud proved to be emblematic of the overall team displays by their respective sides in yesterday evening’s Milan derby.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, who highlight the sense that Martinez was too hot for the Rossoneri backline to handle whilst Giroud was easily marshalled by Inter’s defense.

Martinez scored the game’s only goal to give his team three points and a much-desired derby victory, but in truth this was only a small part of what the Argentine did against his team’s city rivals.

The Argentine played with an intensity that was notable even by his own standards to put the Rossoneri defenders under pressure for ninety minutes, and they looked rattled and barely able to contain the Inter striker.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Giroud was not able to hold the ball up for his team or get himself free from Inter defender Francesco Acerbi.

For the Corriere della Sera, these two performances by the strikers were essentially the match in microcosm for a one-sided derby that saw the Nerazzurri looking fresh and hungry whilst the Rossoneri just looked a bit lost on the pitch.
