Lechia Gdańsk fell to a 3-1 home defeat against Zagłębie Lubin on Saturday evening. As a result, they became the second club to be relegated from the Ekstraklasa.

Knowing that they needed at least a point to keep their survival hopes alive, Lechia took a 16th minute lead through midfielder Jarosław Kubicki. Just before the break, they were pegged back by a goal from Zagłębie defender Bartosz Kopacz.

Kacper Chodyna’s 70th minute strike then edged the visitors in front, helping Zagłębie in their own survival battle. Then with the hosts chasing a desperate equaliser into stoppage time, Tomasz Pienko struck to secure the three points for the Miedziowi and condemn Lechia to their fate.

For a side which started the current campaign in European competition, Lechia’s downfall has been swift. Perhaps having been lured by a potential Conference League campaign, the Biało-Zieloni began their league campaign awfully; just five points from their opening ten games left them with plenty of work to do.

Despite a handful of positive performances, Lechia struggled to string more than a couple of successive wins together. Even a change of coach in March failed to provide them the spark that they needed.

If anything, it made them worse. Despite a draw against fellow relegation battlers Śląsk Wrocław on Davia Badia’s first match, Lechia followed up with their worst run of the season. Five successive defeats finally condemned them to a first spell outside the Ekstraklasa in fifteen seasons.
