Tijjani Reijnders has stressed how important it was for AC Milan to beat Cagliari last night not just for the fans, but also for the pursuit of second place.

Milan broke their run of six games without a win in convincing fashion as they beat a relegation-threatened Cagliari side 5-1 at San Siro on Saturday night, but it came in front of an eerie atmosphere given the Curva Sud protests.

Reijnders had a hand in sealing the victory too. The Rossoneri restored their two-goal lead with just over 15 minutes left in the game and it was a stunning strike from the Dutchman that did so.

The midfielder found space around 25 yards out to let fly and he unleashed a fierce low shot that perfectly arrowed into the bottom corner past a helpless Scuffet.

Reijnders was interviewed by DAZN not long after full-time last night and he commented on the victory, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“It was important to win for second place. After a month like this it wasn’t easy, but we always want to win,” he said.

“The fans are not happy, we understand them. The important thing was to play football to entertain them too. The goal? I’ve been looking for a goal like this for a long time. I’m happy.”

To Milan TV, he added: “This one was important. The last month was difficult, and we needed a win and we did a good job today, and made sure we are in a better place now.

“I hope next season I score more goals and hopefully get more assists. It’s my first season, I had to adapt and next season we have to move on.”
