The 24-year-old has established himself as number one at the Stadium of Light for the past few years, and he has had some huge performances for the Black Cats in that time.

So, it was a real concern for Sunderland when Patterson picked up an injury last month following the win at Luton.

That caused the keeper to miss the past four games, with Simon Moore coming into the XI.

To be fair to the ex-Coventry keeper, whilst the side have stuttered slightly, having drawn three games on the bounce, he has generally done well, keeping three clean sheets in those four games.

However, it appears he could be back on the bench for the trip to The Den, as Le Bris told the club’s media that Patterson has made good progress during the break, which means he will be ready to play in the capital.

Anthony will be available this weekend. He has trained well over the break.”

Anthony Patterson should start for Sunderland

As outlined above, Moore didn’t let Sunderland down in recent games, and he’s a perfectly decent keeper at this level.

But, the reality is that Patterson is an upgrade, so he should come back into the XI if he is fit enough to play, which the manager says is the case.

Millwall away is a really tough test for the Black Cats, with Neil Harris’ side a formidable opponent on their own patch - as victories against Burnley and Leeds United recently proved.

So, they will come under pressure for spells at The Den, meaning Patterson will likely have to make some big saves if they are to leave with three points.

As well as that, he will be tested in the air, with the Lions keen to get the ball in the box when the opportunity arises.

Therefore, Le Bris needs to go with his best XI, and Patterson is the best keeper, which is why he has been on the radar of Premier League clubs in the past, as he is viewed as someone who can play at the highest level in the years to come.

Sunderland will be keen to get back to winning ways

It’s important to remember that Sunderland are unbeaten in eight, so there’s absolutely no need to panic, but three successive draws have allowed clubs to gain ground.

There’s still so much football to be played this season, but the aim for Le Bris’ side will be to finish in the top two given their current position, and they’ve shown over the past few months that they are a very good team who can get results in different ways.

Now, attention turns to Millwall, and it would be a real statement win for Sunderland if they could head back up north with all three points.
