Reggae Girlz announce Summer Series squad

The Reggae Girlz are back and ready for action as they take part in US Soccer’s 2021 WNT Summer Series.

Next week, the Jamaica women’s national team will compete in their first games since February 2020. They will face off against Nigeria on June 10 followed by the United States on June 13.

The Summer Series was created by US Soccer as a way to prepare the USWNT for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. For Jamaica, the series allows the team to regroup and see where things are at. Their next milestone is World Cup qualification in November.

“These games give us a chance to see where we are and to incorporate new faces and talents,” said Reggae Girlz coach Hubert Busby. “These are two great opponents and we are always excited to match skills with the best in the world.”

At a glance

In recent years, Jamaica has seen growth both on and off the pitch. Currently ranked 51st in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, the island nation experienced its first World Cup in 2019.

While they had a tough go at it during the World Cup, facing other World Cup-calibre teams can only benefit the squad.

Busby’s Summer Series squad selection proves the depth and diversity that Jamaica posses. Both rising stars and veteran players make up the 23-player squad list.

Regrouping for the Summer Series is the perfect opportunity for Jamaica to hit their stride and qualify for the 2023 World Cup. With the right approach, 2021 could prove to be a turning point for the Reggae Girlz.
