Premier League and Football League players will be allowed to break their fast for evening games during Ramadan.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City and Chelsea duo N’Golo Kanté and Wesley Fofana are among the big name players who have regularly refrained from eating and drinking in daylight hours as part of the holy period.

But, according to Sky Sports News, practising Muslim footballers are set to be permitted to take on liquids, energy gels and food supplements either in-game or ahead of night-time kick-offs.

The advice has been made with guidance from refereeing bodies to take into account players who may need to break fasting in the month of Ramadan, which begins on Wednesday.

Previously, a Premier League game between Leicester City and Crystal Palace was paused in April 2021 to allow Fofana and Cheikhou Kouyaté to break their fast.
