Referee Michael Fabbri has been criticized for his attitude while taking charge of Inter’s match against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi yesterday evening.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport argue that the official was not consistent in his decisions and did not interact well with the players during the Serie A clash.

The match in Tuscany was not overly ill-tempered, but there were controversial moments, and the head referee could have done more to get a handle on the game.

Inter saw a difficult first half in which they were roundly outplayed by La Viola compounded by incorrect decisions against them, particularly an extremely harsh yellow card to Milan Skriniar and a foul not awarded for what looked to be an extremely obvious handball by Cristiano Biraghi on the edge of the Fiorentina penalty area.

In the end, Viola winger Nicolas Gonzalez was dismissed for two yellow cards in quick succession and can only have himself to blame for his excessive protestations.

However, the Argentine’s frustrations were understandable given the head official’s sometimes baffling decision-making, and perhaps the situation could have been avoided had Fabbri done better to take charge of the match and stamp it with his authority.
