Referee Michael Fabbri performed well in Lazio’s 3-1 win vs Sampdoria but the red card shown spoilt his work.

As reported by Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via LazioNews24) earlier today, the 37-year-old Ravenna-born referee did a good job managing last night’s match between Lazio and Sampdoria, keeping things under control and not allowing tensions to get too high.

In particular, Fabbri did well to not grant a penalty following the slight contact between Antonio Candreva and Felipe Anderson in the second half.

However, Fabbri’s work was undermined by the red card shown to Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the second half, a defining moment in the match.

This was considered a blatant error by the major Italian sports papers and unfortunately it overshadowed an otherwise good evening.

The two quick yellow cards were considered harsh because Milinkovic-Savic was being held by Adrien Silva and his protests following the first yellow were nothing offensive.
