Referee designator Gianluca Rocchi has admitted that there was an oversight that occurred in the build-up to AC Milan’s opening goal against Empoli.

The move for Ante Rebic’s opener at the Stadio Carlo Castellani started with a throw-in from Sandro Tonali that found Rafael Leao in space down the right, and he then cut the ball back to the Croatian who fired home from deep inside the box.

Empoli boss Paolo Zanetti complained in his post-match interview about the fact Tonali took the throw from around 10 metres ahead of where the ball went out, and Rocchi has conceded the officials should have handled the incident differently.

“I have to say that we should have paid more attention, that throw-in is the only slight error in an excellent weekend which makes me proud,” Rocchi told Radio Anch’io lo Sport (via Football Italia).

“There were fantastic performances from referees, including Aureliano at Empoli. Aside from that incident which should have been handled differently, the rest of the game was great. I am convinced that we are all going in the right direction.”
