Referee Davide Massa was correct not to award Atalanta a penalty for either of their appeals in yesterday evening’s Serie A clash with Inter, according to Italian media.

The referee’s performance was praised in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that Massa got the major decisions right despite a few minor incorrect decisions.

La Dei midfielder Mario Pasalic went down in the box late on in the first half with some contact from the arm of Inter wing-back Ivan Perisic, but Massa waved it away as he judged there to have not been enough contact to award a spot kick.

Then, Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners carried the ball into the box where he went down between Nerazzurri defenders Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar.

However, Massa adjudged that the Dutchman had simply lost his balance rather than being fouled in the incident, so awarded no penalty.

For the Gazzetta, the referee was correct in both of these decisions.
