Liverpool Plot Midfield and Left-Back Reinforcements as Transfer Plans Take Shape

Milos Kerkez Considered for Long-Term Left-Back Succession

As Liverpool prepare for a summer of strategic squad reshaping, one thing feels inevitable—Andy Robertson’s role as the club’s nailed-on left-back is nearing its sunset. The 30-year-old Scotland international, pivotal since arriving in 2017, has been a relentless engine down the flank, but signs suggest the club is now prioritising a long-term successor.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has emerged as the most prominent name in the frame. The 20-year-old Hungarian international impressed throughout the 2024/25 campaign with his aggressive overlapping runs and positional discipline. Liverpool’s interest signals a clear desire to future-proof a position that has served them well for nearly a decade.

With the Premier League transfer window opening in two phases this summer—from June 1–10 and again from June 16 to September 11—Liverpool’s recruitment team is expected to strike early, laying the groundwork for transformative business.

Eyes on Ederson to Bolster Midfield Core

While Ryan Gravenberch has shown glimpses of real promise under Arne Slot, Liverpool’s midfield evolution is far from complete. The deep-lying role remains a focal point, and multiple targets are being evaluated to ensure the club doesn’t lose tempo in possession or tenacity in transitions.

One name returning to Anfield’s radar is Ederson of Atalanta, a dynamic midfielder who has grown into one of Serie A’s most complete operators. As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are considering reigniting their interest in the 25-year-old Brazilian, who they had been tracking last summer.

Since joining Atalanta from Salernitana in 2022 for €22.9 million, Ederson has flourished. In 131 appearances, he has scored 12 goals and contributed four assists—though his true value lies in his versatility.

Competition Heating Up for Atalanta Star

Liverpool aren’t alone in their admiration. Manchester United, Juventus and Atlético Madrid are all reportedly willing to meet Atalanta’s €60 million valuation. That price tag reflects both Ederson’s output and Atalanta’s position—third in Serie A and seeking Champions League qualification.

The Italian club has begun preparing for life without their midfield general, reportedly eyeing Empoli’s Tino Anjorin as a replacement. As TuttoAtalanta notes, this suggests a “pragmatic approach—cashing in on a player with three years remaining on his contract—reflects their recognition of Ederson’s elevated market value following two stellar seasons.”

Crucially, the player himself hasn’t ruled out a Premier League move. “I like Italy, I’m well adapted, but I’m curious about the Premier League, so I don’t know,” Ederson admitted. “If I go somewhere else, I will continue to grow.”

Midfield Plans Beyond Ederson Still in Play

If a deal proves elusive, Liverpool could pivot back to Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad, a target from last summer. While the Spaniard opted to remain in La Liga, his name is expected to re-emerge in the club’s summer shortlist.

With Arne Slot’s tactical revolution gaining traction, the club appears committed to refreshing key positions without disrupting the core identity. Whether that means a breakout move for Kerkez, a marquee bid for Ederson, or an opportunistic swoop for Zubimendi, the message is clear—Liverpool intend to be bold.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this report feels like the early stages of something significant. The idea of bringing in someone like Ederson—versatile, press-resistant, physically dominant—feels like the midfield upgrade we’ve craved since the tail end of Klopp’s reign. His stats are strong, his engine undeniable, and his Europa League pedigree fits the kind of player Arne Slot seems to favour.

There’s cautious optimism too around Milos Kerkez. Young, quick, brave—he could be the next key figure in Liverpool’s flank-heavy system. The club planning for life after Robertson is smart, even if it tugs at the heart a little.

That said, competition for Ederson will be fierce. Manchester United sniffing around never sits well, and €60 million is a hefty price. But if Liverpool want to dominate again, these are the battles they must win—early, decisively, and with a clear plan for integration.

Slot’s first full summer window could be the one that defines his early years at Anfield. And from this vantage point, the ambition seems aligned with the expectations of a fanbase that won’t settle for just ‘top four’ anymore.
