Club América will have a swift chance to move on from their missed opportunity at a fourth consecutive Liga MX title when they face Toluca in the upcoming Campeón de Campeones. This match, the first major trophy of the new season, is scheduled for Sunday, 20 July 2025, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with the kick-off time yet to be announced.

The fixture sees América, winners of the Apertura 2024, take on Clausura 2025 champions Toluca, who ended their own 15-year wait for Liga MX silverware by denying the Azulcrema that historic fourth straight crown. The match not only offers América the prospect of immediate redemption following that recent disappointment, but also a chance to stand alone as the most decorated club in Campeón de Campeones history.

Both América and Chivas currently sit atop the all-time leaderboard with seven titles apiece. However, while América have also finished as runner-up seven times, Chivas have three runner-up finishes to their name. The most recent Campeón de Campeones won by América came at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, thanks to their league dominance as bicampeón; as holders of both Liga MX tournaments that year, they secured the distinction without taking to the pitch.

For Toluca, this contest is an opportunity to cement their resurgence: they have four Campeón de Campeones trophies, with their last coming in the 2005-06 season—the final edition before a nine-year pause in the event. Victory would see the Diablos Rojos join León and Atlas at five in the ranking of most crowned sides.

Beyond its domestic significance, this match carries international consequence. The winner will represent Mexico against Major League Soccer’s champion in the Campeones Cup later this year.

After a bruising finale to the Liga MX season—where Toluca’s title was achieved despite star forward Paulinho revealing he had played “injured” during the championship run—both sides will be eager to set the early tone for the campaign ahead. For América, the stage is set to either avenge last term’s heartbreak and establish a new record, or watch Toluca claim fresh historical standing of their own.
