Red Star FC, a third tier football club based in the suburbs of Paris, has released a statement condemning a group of supporters who reportedly broke into the VIP section of the club and attacked up to 200 people, also hospitalising one individual. The incident occurred after Red Star missed out on promotion to Ligue 2, and an ongoing dispute with the club’s leadership.

The communiqué accuses around 40 fans, some of which were disguised, from the Tribune Rino Della Negra of “theft, vandalism, physical violence & the use of bags of liquid resembling fake blood.”

The club also say that “These attacks will have legal consequences. They follow a succession of actions taken against the club throughout the season, but this time the intolerable boundary that has been crossed is that of violence.”

Whilst the motive of the attack remains uncertain, president Patrice Haddad was seen on the pitch following the match against Stade Briochin.

This is not the first incident that has occurred at Stade Bauer. Last season’s fixture against FC Sète in the third tier was abandoned due to supporters protesting the controversial takeover of the club by American investment firm 777 Partners.

Earlier this season, two games behind closed doors were played out – one due to a protest against kick-off times aimed at Canal+, and the other for an incident involving throwing club-branded cups at match officials in a match against Le Puy.

The team, led by Canal+ pundit and former Marseille defender Habaib Beye, missed out on promotion to Ligue 2 last night in the final round of fixtures in the Championnat National by two points, having been involved in a season-long promotion battle involved three other sides.
