Martin Ødegaard’s opening goal at Newcastle is hugely significant in the Gunners’ push for the Premier League title but also saw the Norwegian become the best-scoring midfielder in a season since another Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas, in 2009/10.
The skipper followed on from his two goals against Chelsea midweek with a fine strike from the edge of the box in the 14th minute at St. James’ Park. He was under limited pressure from the Magpies’ defence but still did well to grab his 14th goal of a brilliant league campaign.
He is now within one of Fabregas’ record of 15 league goals in 2009/10 and with three games to come after today, one would be foolish to bet against the 24-year-old moving past the Spaniard in the Arsenal Premier League records.
The goal also sees him draw level with another Arsenal legend, Robert Pires, who netted 14 goals in three consecutive Premier League season from 2002/03 to 2004/05.
