Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire could miss the group stages of the Euros

According to The Daily Star, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire could end up playing no part in the group stages of England’s campaign at this summer’s European Championship.

The 28-year-old returned to training yesterday morning after spending a month on the sidelines. Maguire last took to the field in United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa on May 9.

The defender has been undergoing intensive treatment at St George’s Park in the hope of being fit in time for England’s opener against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday. He will however not make the cut and is also set to miss out on the clash against Scotland on June 18.

Despite taking part in training on Thursday, Maguire showcased restricted movement and failed to last a full session. Maguire now has his eyes set on England’s final Group D game against the Czech Republic on June 22. With a return to the starting XI still appearing fanciful, he looks to be targeting a spot on the bench.

His absence will be a bitter blow for Gareth Southgate. Maguire is easily England’s best defender and not having him lead the defence is a handicap.

While the Three Lions boss can call upon the likes of John Stones, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady and Ben White, none of them can hold a candle to Maguire’s ability or leadership skills.

An experienced hand!

The United skipper was a key member of the England side that reached the semifinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. There is now the real possibility that he could fail to play any part in the tournament altogether.

Incidentally, with 32 caps, the United ace also happens to be one of the experienced players in the England squad. Among Southgate’s defensive options, only Stones has more appearances.

While it is unfortunate that Maguire could miss out on the tournament, it will do no one a favour if he is rushed back into action. The 28-year-old should be given the time to get back into proper shape before he next takes to the field.
