Buchanan's devastating injury could affect City's January plans.

Chris Davies has said that there may be scope for Birmingham City to venture into the left-back market following Lee Buchanan's knee injury.

The defender was stretchered off in Blues' 0-0 draw with Blackpool before the turn of the year and is now set to miss the rest of the season as a result, the manager confirmed after his Birmingham's second stalemate in their last two matches, versus Stockport County.

The 23-year-old had only returned from a separate calf injury earlier in December, starting and impressing in all three of the matches that he played in. He even got on the scoresheet in his first game back against Bristol Rovers.

Chris Davies' January transfer window admission following Lee Buchanan's injury

Summer signing Alex Cochrane is the only option that Davies now has at left-back. With the transfer window now open, he has admitted that there's a chance that Birmingham could look to acquire a player in this position before the deadline on 3rd February.

"Lee’s injury is quite severe as everyone would have guessed," said Davies, via Birmingham Live. "He will be out for a considerable amount of time with a bad knee injury, as you probably saw from the pictures, and he won’t be with us for this season absolutely."

On the option of bringing in another left-back this winter, the manager said: "Possibly, yes. My thinking was always to have a look how we got through Christmas with injuries and stuff but we are at this moment in time assessing where the squad is at and whether we need to bring in one or two to help the players. That’s something that we are looking at."

Buchanan isn't the only injury concern that Davies is currently dealing with. Both Keshi Anderson and Emil Hansson are set to miss the next few weeks due to knocks that they picked up over the Christmas period.

Birmingham City must take left-back action in January

Birmingham certainly have the best squad in League One; there's not really much argument or debate about that. They have a number of highly talented players in every position on the pitch, or at least they did before Buchanan got hurt.

Now they have an area of vulnerability, one that could become worse if Cochrane were to sustain an injury of his own.

It would be reckless for City, especially given their financial resources, to not make a move to sign a left-back this window. Whether it be permanently or on loan, they simply have to go out and acquire someone who can provide cover in this position.
