FLW's Charlton Athletic fan pundit discussed who he'd like to see his club sign from the free agent market
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Charlton Athletic have been told to sign free agent Marcus Browne following his release by Oxford United at the end of the 2023/24 season in a bid to bolster their attacking midfield ranks.
The 26-year-old left the Kassam Stadium in the summer after two years as an Oxford United player, but his time in Yellow was overshadowed by injuries, and he played just 15 games for the club in all competitions last season.
Browne is a talented player and will be looking to find a club in the near future to get his career back on track after a disappointing 23/24 campaign, and Charlton Athletic have been told to add the ex-Middlesbrough man to their ranks as he'll give them a different option in attacking midfield, and he can also play on the wing.
Our Charlton Athletic fan pundit, Ben Fleming, believes that Browne would be a good addition to Nathan Jones' squad, and that the 26-year-old could be a really good player at League One level if he's able to remain injury free.
Speaking to Football League World, Ben said: "We’re probably still missing that more creative, more dynamic attacking midfielder.
“Obviously, we’ve got Coventry and Docherty who are more defensive, Berry’s a bit more advanced and Allan Campbell likes to get a bit further forward, but I think there’s something to be said about having someone with a bit more of a creative outlet.
“Probably not someone who could start every game but somebody who could be brought on, someone like Marcus Browne would work really well.
“Obviously, he’s had his injury problems, and it’s not necessarily something, and it’s not something that Charlton fans would naturally warm to, because we’ve had our fair share of players with injury problems, but I think what we’re starting to do with Chuks Aneke, managing his minutes with the new medical team we put in place last season, could do a similar thing with Marcus Browne.
“He’s really good at this level, did well with Oxford, and he’s a bit more of that attacking midfielder who may not start too many games but someone you could throw on in an advanced role, and he would offer something different in midfield that we don’t currently have, and would offer us something if we moved to a wide formation because I know he can play on the wing.”
If they were to sign Browne on a short-term deal, he would be a low-risk signing, and if he performed well, they could sign the player on a longer contract.
As a free agent, Browne will be keen to get back out there and show what he's capable of, and he's shown in the past that he's a good player at League One level.
It's a difficult time of the year for free agents with the majority of clubs happy with the business they've completed over the summer, and they're often waiting for players to get injured before they're needed and signed.
Browne won't want to spend too much time as a free agent, and a move to a big, ambitious League One club in the form of Charlton seems like it would be a good deal for both parties.
