The hosts made their intentions known from the start as they threatened their opponents right off the hop.

Adnan Januzaj had a chance to break the deadlock early on and while his strike got the better of Jan Oblak in net, it hit off the outside of the post.

Hitting the woodwork would then become a theme during the match as Yannick Carrasco saw a shot of his own fall just short at the other end.

As time went on, Atleti struggled to make the most of their possession of the ball while Real Sociedad took their opportunities when they came.

The breakthrough came around the 30-minute mark when Januzaj somehow beat three defenders in the air to head past Oblak for 1-0.

Coming out after the break the momentum continued for the hosts and they pounced on a mental lapse from Atleti to double their lead.

Felipe was double-teamed and subsequently cracked under pressure allowing Alexander Sørloth to go on and slot the ball home for 2-0.

And even with virtually the entire second half remaining, Diego Simeone’s side couldn’t pull off a comeback and exit the competition at the Round of 16.
