Real Madrid are back in the United States for yet another summer, following last year's visit, to make it 22 trips to the country throughout their history. We have to go back to 1927 to recall the first time the Whites travelled stateside. That year, our boys took on Galicia SC in New York (1-1). Since then, we have played some 49 games in North America, with four more soon to come against Milan (Los Angeles), Manchester United (Houston), Barcelona (Dallas) and Juventus (Orlando).
Di Stéfano's Madrid More than 30 years passed between that inaugural trip and the team's next visit to the United States. It came in 1959 with two fixtures at Ebbets Field baseball arena in Brooklyn (New York). That team was led by Di Stéfano, Puskas and Gento, as they made history with their feats in the European Cups. Two years later, in 1961, came the first visit to Los Angeles to face LA United. Madrid ran riot (9-0) after actress Rita Hayworth had taken the ceremonial kick-off.
The Yeye era The fourth trip to the United States was in 1965, marking the start of the season that would end with the sixth European Cup. The Yeyé team led by Grosso and Zoco, among others, took part in a 1-1 draw with Independiente in New York. In 1967, Houston hosted a clash between Real Madrid and West Ham (3-2), before our team returned to New York and the Yankee Stadium one year on to beat New York General (4-1).
The Vulture's Cohort Some 22 years later, Real Madrid returned to the United States in 1990, spearheaded by the Vulture's Cohort that had won five LaLiga titles on the bounce. The Whites played four games in California, winning three of them.
The 21st Century The first 21st-century trip to the United States came in 2002, the club's Centenary year. The team travelled to New Jersey, where they faced Roma. Three years later, with Ronaldo and Beckham in the ranks, Real Madrid got a summer tour underway in Chicago before making their way to Asia. The team beat Chivas de Guadalajara (1-3) and Los Angeles Galaxy (0-2).
In 2006, they played another two games. The first was in Seattle against DC United (1-1), and the second in Utah against Real Salt Lake City (0-2). Washington was Real Madrid's base for their US visit in 2009, with the FedEx Field hosting a clash that ended with a 3-0 win over DC United.
Los Angeles, a home away from home The first time Real Madrid used Los Angeles as their summer training base was back in 2010. The team played two friendlies, against LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl and Mexican side América in San Francisco. One year on, Los Angeles, San Diego and Philadelphia all enjoyed madridista victories. In 2012 the team visited Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Philadelphia, while in 2013 it was Phoenix, Saint Louis, Los Angeles and Miami, where they won the International Champions Cup final against Chelsea. Los Angeles, Dallas and Michigan were the team's 2014 destinations.
Recent visits Following a year away, Real Madrid returned to the United States in 2016 to play in Ohio, Michigan and New Jersey. The 2017 trip saw the first ever Clásico not on Spanish soil, in Miami. That year, Madrid also played in Santa Clara, Los Angeles and Chicago. In 2018, Miami, Maryland and New Jersey hosted encounters with Manchester United, Juventus and Roma. The following year, our team was back stateside for the fourth year in a row, playing in Houston, Maryland and New Jersey against Bayern, Arsenal and Atlético, respectively. Last season, three years after the last visit, they faced Barcelona (Las Vegas), Club América (San Francisco) and Juventus (Los Angeles).
