It was a scintillating opening 45 minutes, as both teams looked keen on playing front-foot football to snatch the lead, and it was Atleti who struck first.

Mario Hermoso leapt above the Real Madrid defence to head home from a corner to snatch the lead for Diego Simeone’s men, but that was only opening the opening salvo.

Los Blancos responded well, scoring two goals in less than 10 minutes through Antonio Rüdiger and Ferland Mendy respectively.

The drama would not stop there however, as Antoine Griezmann sent a superb finish past Kepa before the break to level the scoreline, and become Atleti’s all-time leading goalscorer in the process.

The fireworks were dampened in the second-half as the game fell into a malaise for the opening half-hour.

But the drama was ramped up once again when Atleti took the lead thanks to a coming together in the box between Álvaro Morata and Kepa which took the keeper out of the play before the ball slid over the line.

While the Real Madrid players protested the decision, the goal stood after a VAR check.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men responded just like they did in the first half, creating a flurry of chances in quick succession before Dani Carvajal pounced on a loose ball to fire home and send the game to extra-time.

The turnaround was completed deep into extra-time when substitute Joselu saw his glancing header forced an own-goal from Stefan Savić.

A late strike from Brahim Díaz killed off any late fightback from Atleti.

Real Madrid will await the winner of Barcelona and Osasuna.
