Real Madrid have officially signed Alvaro Carreras from Benfica for €50 million, but the deal includes some financial details that work in Madrid’s favour.

Although Los Blancos are paying a hefty sum, they will get part of the money back through FIFA’s solidarity mechanism because Carreras spent part of his youth career in the Real Madrid academy.

Benfica confirmed this unusual situation in an official statement. They explained that 5% of the €50 million transfer fee, around €2.5 million, will be held back for distribution among the clubs that helped develop Carreras during his early years.

Real Madrid are one of those clubs, alongside Galicia de Caranza, Racing de Ferrol, and Deportivo de La Coruna, since Carreras passed through their academies before moving abroad.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD informs that it has reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of all the rights of the player Alvaro Carreras, for an amount of €50,000,000 (fifty million euros).

“Furthermore, it is reported that Real Madrid will have the right to retain the 5% solidarity mechanism, for subsequent distribution among the clubs that participated in the player’s development,” read a statement from the Portuguese team.

Manchester United also set to benefit

Another important detail of the transfer involves Manchester United. The English club is entitled to receive a 20% share of the capital gain from Carreras’ move to Real Madrid.

This means United will pocket around €10 million, based on the profit Benfica made from selling the player.

“In addition, Manchester United will be entitled to receive a 20% capital gain on the transfer of the aforementioned player, calculated after deducting the acquisition value of the player’s rights and the withheld solidarity mechanism.

Benfica also made it clear in their statement that the deal with Real Madrid includes no costs for agents or intermediaries, which is another detail that simplifies the transaction.

“Finally, it should be noted that Benfica SAD will not have to assume any expenses for intermediation services.”

Carreras originally left Real Madrid for Manchester United before joining Benfica, who later bought him outright.

Now, with this latest move back to Madrid, United will earn a significant sum thanks to a smart sell-on clause agreed during his transfer to Portugal.
