Real Madrid will not play at the Bernabéu when LaLiga returns later this month.
Club president Florentino Pérez confirmed the decision on Monday, saying the club will play their remaining home games at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium at their Valdebebas training centre.
“We have made the decision to play all the games in which we will play as the home team in the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium in our Ciudad Real Madrid ,” Pérez wrote in a letter to Madrid’s supporters.
“This decision will allow us to advance in the works of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.”
The Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium has 6000 seats and usually hosts the club’s youth team matches.
Work is now underway to install new floodlights, advertising space, and VAR technology ahead of the return of LaLiga.
The Bernabéu renovations will see a number of modern updates to the ground, including a retractable roof and a retractable pitch for when the stadium hosts events such as concerts.
Those works are planned to finish in 2022, though this decision could see that date brought forward.
