Real Madrid face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie tonight.
The Spanish sides collide in the capital in a mouth-watering clash between the city rivals. Real Madrid are aiming to defend their Champions League crown and have proven to be Atletico’s nemesis in European competition. Los Blancos beat Atleti in the 2014 and 2016 finals, in addition to eliminating their neighbours in the 2017 semi-finals.
Atletico are out for revenge, while the teams are embroiled in a tense battle for La Liga, alongside Barcelona. There’s just three points between the top three with Atletico and Real positioned second and third behind the Catalans as things stand.
Real Madrid are aiming to bounce back from the setback of a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis at the weekend. Both league meetings between the Madrid rivals ended in 1-1 draws this season.
Carlo Ancelotti will be without Jude Bellingham, who is banned for the first leg. In addition to his domestic suspension, Bellingham was booked against Manchester City in the play-off round to pick up a European ban.
Real Madrid remain without Eder Militato and Dani Carvajal due to ACL injuries, while hamstring issues have sidelined Dani Ceballos and Jesus Vallejo. Federico Valverde is expected to recover from a slight knock to feature.
Real Madrid predicted XI: Courtois; Vazquez, Rudiger, Asencio, Mendy; Tchouameni, Camavinga, Valverde; Rodrygo, Vinicius, Mbappe.
Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday 4th March 2025. Kick-off at the Bernabeu is 20:00 GMT.
