Real Madrid were recently offered the chance to sign Viktor Gyokeres, but according to journalist Mario Cortegana, the club decided to pass on the opportunity.

Gyokeres has been in brilliant form this season at Sporting CP, scoring 54 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, catching the eye of top European clubs. However, despite being in the market for a new striker, Madrid chose not to move forward.

The reason behind the decision lies in the club’s current plan. Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Madrid are looking for a short-term solution for the number 9 position.

Real Madrid have a different plan

They want someone who can act as a backup rather than demand a regular starting role. This was also seen in the signing of Joselu, who accepted limited playing time and brought balance to the squad.

Alonso is believed to prefer players who fit into the team without disrupting the existing attacking structure.

This is based on his experience at Bayer Leverkusen, where he worked with players like Victor Boniface and Borja Iglesias in similar roles.

While Madrid appreciate Gyokeres’ qualities, they ruled him out because of his high price tag and his profile as a starting striker, which doesn’t fit their current strategy.

Gyokeres is not a cheap option

Even if Madrid were to change their mind, signing Gyokeres wouldn’t be easy. Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has made it clear that the Swedish striker will not leave on the cheap.

He stated, “Viktor Gyokeres won’t leave here for €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons. He won’t, and the game the agent is playing will only make the situation worse. As of now, we haven’t had one offer for him.”

This statement shows that Sporting are standing firm. With no official bids received yet and a high asking price, it looks unlikely that Gyokeres will be wearing white anytime soon.
