According to a report from SportBild, relayed by SPORT, Xabi Alonso is expected to decide on his future by the end of March.
The Spanish coach, who has been strongly linked with Real Madrid as a potential successor to Carlo Ancelotti, remains one of the most talked-about figures in European football.
While Alonso is widely regarded as the favourite to take over at the Santiago Bernabeu, the timing of his appointment remains uncertain. Everything will depend on how Real Madrid finishes the season.
If Ancelotti secures a major trophy and leaves a strong impression, his contract, which runs until 2026, may not be cut short.
Interestingly, Alonso’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen also runs until 2026, creating further intrigue over his next move.
Leverkusen, however, are unwilling to wait for Madrid’s decision and are keen to know Alonso’s plans as soon as possible.
The club’s CEO, Fernando Carro, and sporting director, Simon Rolfes, are confident that Alonso will honour his current deal, as he has not given any indication of an early departure.

In fact, they are even considering offering him a contract renewal in the summer to secure his long-term future.
Despite this, Alonso is expected to provide a definitive answer regarding his plans by the end of March. This timeframe aligns with his previous decision to stay at Leverkusen last year, despite interest from Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
Reports from Germany suggest that March 27 could be the key date when Alonso reveals his decision, possibly during the press conference before their match against Bochum, once the international break concludes.
Leverkusen are eager to have clarity before April, as they need to plan their squad for the next season, with Alonso playing a crucial role in their transfer strategy.
Should Alonso decide to remain in Germany for another year, it could have a significant impact on Real Madrid’s managerial plans as well.
Ancelotti might be given an extension, allowing Madrid to ensure a smooth transition before bringing Alonso in at a later stage.
