Real Madrid returned to the top of LaLiga after beating Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Goals from David Alaba and Lucas Vázquez were enough to secure victory in a game of few clear-cut chances.

Barcelona started brightest and should have been ahead when Sergiño Dest was left unmarked in the box, only for the defender to somehow blaze over from close range.

But Los Blancos grew into the game and took the lead when David Alaba dispossessed Memphis Depay before continuing his run upfield and firing past Marc André ter Stegen.

After the break, Ansu Fati called Thibaut Courtois into action, before Karim Benzema almost made it two but couldn’t connect with Ferland Mendy’s teasing cross.

There was time for late drama after Gerard Piqué thought he deserved a penalty in injury time, only for Real Madrid to break and double their lead after Lucas Vázquez bundled home from close range.

Sergio Agüero gave Barça hope after netting a late consolation but there was no time to capitalise with referee José Sánchez Martínez blowing for full time seconds later.

Real Madrid have now won the last four Clásico’s and return to the top of LaLiga, with Barcelona sitting between Real Betis and Athletic Club in eighth.
