Real Madrid made strong attempts to try and sign Alvaro Carreras from SL Benfica before the FIFA Club World Cup but it was not to be.

The young left-back, who previously trained at La Fabrica, is seen as the top target for the position and an agreement over personal terms has already been reached. However, talks with Benfica have proven to be difficult thus far.

Real Madrid to make a fresh push for Carreras

Now, according to SPORT, Real Madrid are back in pursuit of Carreras following Benfica’s elimination from the Club World Cup by Chelsea, reigniting interest in a player long on their radar.

Benfica’s stance in recent weeks was that there was no formal offer, despite Real Madrid making direct contact to inquire about the player and explore the possibility of a transfer.

The Portuguese giants’ response was categorical: unless Real Madrid paid the full €50 million release clause, there would be no negotiations. The Spanish club did present an offer, but it fell below the buyout amount and was rejected by Benfica president Rui Costa.

Real Madrid are maintaining their usual non-confrontational negotiation approach. The club is still hopeful of reaching an agreement, and will not abandon the transfer pursuit.

There has also been speculation that Real Madrid could move quickly to finalise the deal and add Carreras to their Club World Cup squad. However, tournament regulations prohibit a player from representing two clubs in the same edition.

Carreras already played two matches for Benfica in the competition, served a suspension in the third, and was not used in the fourth. According to the rules, “a player may not participate in the tournament with two different teams.”

Despite that, Real Madrid remain focused on signing Carreras for the future, rather than for immediate use in the tournament.
