Real Madrid’s midfield plans could be reshaped in the final stretch of the transfer window.

In fact, according to AS, the club is closely monitoring AZ Alkmaar’s young talent Kees Smit, with a potential deal expected to cost between €25–30 million.

While he is not currently a priority signing, his name remains firmly on the radar as Los Blancos consider options to strengthen their midfield.

For much of the summer, Madrid viewed their squad as complete. However, Dani Ceballos’ potential departure has changed the outlook.

With his exit, the club suddenly face a gap in midfield, forcing Xabi Alonso and the board to reconsider the market.

Alonso has made it clear that if Ceballos leaves, he wants a replacement. The club understands the need but also recognises the difficulty of completing such a deal with only days left before the window closes.

Kees Smit – A talent under watch

At just 19 years old, Smit is one of the brightest prospects in Dutch football. Real Madrid scouts have been keeping a close eye on him for months, regularly travelling to Alkmaar to monitor his development.

He is under contract with AZ until 2028, which gives the Dutch club a strong negotiating position.

The issue, however, is positional. Smit is more of a central midfielder than a pure defensive pivot, and Madrid ideally want someone who can offer balance in the holding role.

That factor has left the deal somewhat uncertain, with his signing initially considered unlikely this summer.

What is Real Madrid’s plan?

Interestingly, with Ceballos’ departure, the situation has shifted at Real Madrid. Suddenly, what was once 90% ruled out is now back on the table.

If Madrid decide to push, Smit’s transfer would be a manageable outlay compared to other targets.

Still, the final decision will depend on whether the club prioritises experience in the pivot role or chooses to invest in youthful potential.

Either way, Kees Smit remains a name to watch as the window ticks down.
