After enjoying a special season with Real Madrid during which he played an integral role in the club’s treble success, Vinicius Jr. is now leading Brazil’s campaign at the 2024 Copa America.

The 23-year-old, as a result, has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the Ballon d’Or this year, along with his club teammate Jude Bellingham.

Vinicius receives Alisson’s endorsement

A number of players, present and past, have backed Vinicius Jr.’s candidacy for the Ballon d’Or and now Liverpool and Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker has joined the list.

The Selecao shot-stopper has claimed that the 23-year-old Real Madrid ace would be a worthy winner of the Golden Orb, as he said:

“The last game (against Paraguay) was a demonstration of what he can do. We know the ability he has, what he has done this season. He is worthy of being awarded as the best in the world.”

There has been some criticism of Vinicius’ performance on the international level, but Alisson backed the forward to reach the level he has shown at Real Madrid with Brazil ‘naturally’ and that the rest of the team must also perform to help him win the Ballon d’Or.

Vinicius is the leader of this Brazil squad for the Copa America in the United States, with Neymar missing out after failing to recover in time from a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee.

The Real Madrid winger was the star of the show for the Selecao during their 4-1 victory over Paraguay. The No. 7 had scored three international goals in 31 games before that match and last Friday he netted twice in 15 minutes.
