Atlético de Madrid put in a stellar derby performance to deliver Real Madrid their first loss of the campaign.
Scorers: Morata 4′, 46′, Griezmann 18′ ; Kroos 35′
Real Madrid’s late game heroics have made the headlines as of late, but it was the opening exchanges where the narrative was set at the Metropolitano.
It only took four minutes for Álvaro Morata to head home Atleti’s opener and put Real under the cosh in rapid fashion.
To make matters worse for the visitors, Antione Griezmann doubled the hosts’ lead less than 15 minutes later to bring the home crowd to their feet.
A Toni Kroos rocket into the bottom corner changed the complexion of the tie in the final 10 minutes of the half, giving Real Madrid life as the two teams headed into the break.
That life would be sucked right back out of Los Blancos after the restart, as Álvaro Morata bagged his brace and doubled Atleti’s lead once again.
The visitors pushed to get a foothold in the match in search of parity, but Diego Simeone’s men did what they do best and set up shop, fending off any late fightback to pick up the three points from their bitter rivals and move into the top-six in LaLiga.
