Real Madrid striker Mariano Díaz reportedly opted against joining Benfica despite a deal being agreed between both clubs.
Mariano has played just 685 minutes over the last two seasons, despite being re-signed from Lyon after his prolific 2017/18 campaign.
According to AS, Benfica negotiated an initial season-long loan with option to buy next summer but the 27-year-old preferred to stay.
Madrid are keen to get Mariano off their books with COVID-19 hitting their finances hard, with club officials expecting a quiet summer.
The report claims that no other team are willing to meet his current €5m-per-year annual wages.
Lucas Vázquez, Luka Jović and Sergio Reguilón have also been deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Zinedine Zidane.
