According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Borja Mayoral is ready to switch to AS Roma this summer. The attacker has reportedly agreed to don the Giallorossi colours, but the Serie A outfit will now have to reach an agreement with Real Madrid regarding a transfer. Los Blancos are apparently keen on offloading Mayoral this summer. However, there is a possibility that the player might extend his contract and then move to AS Roma on loan.

Borja Mayoral’s Struggles At Real Madrid

Mayoral has had an unfortunate career at Real Madrid following his initial promotion to the senior side back in 2016. He was shipped out on loan to VfL Wolfsburg that summer, with the player failing to acclimatize himself into the Bundesliga.

Mayoral surprisingly spent the 2017/18 campaign with Real Madrid. But, he could only muster 336 minutes of league football, though his tally of three goals was rather commendable.

It was followed by two back to back loan spells at Levante. While his 2018/19 campaign was rather disappointing, the 23-year-old did actually impress last season.

Indeed, Mayoral scored eight goals in 34 appearances, helping Levante achieve a mid-table finish as he eventually returned to Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Does He Have Any Future At Real Madrid?

Real Madrid have appeared surprisingly quiet in the ongoing transfer window. They have done well to get rid of players like Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Reinier, Brahim Diaz and Oscar Rodriguez. However, they are yet to sign a single new player.

On the flip side, it does bode well for the fringe players like Mayoral and Luka Jovic. Mayoral, in particular, may have a slight opportunity to compete with the likes of Jovic, Mariano Diaz and Karim Benzema for the number nine spot. However, it remains highly unlikely that he will be considered as the primary alternative for the first-choice Benzema.

A Move To AS Roma Could Make Sense?

At the end of the day, Mayoral’s chances at Real Madrid will depend on how the club fares during the remaining days of this summer transfer window. But, prolonging his stay at the Bernabeu might not be the best option for the 23-year-old.

That is where a switch to AS Roma makes sense. The Serie A giants are looking for a new striker following the departure of Patrik Schick while star player Edin Dzeko has been linked with a move elsewhere.

It opens up an opportunity for Mayoral to potentially become a first-team regular for Paulo Fonseca’s men as the Spaniard looks to revive his career at Stadio Olimpico next season.
