Real Madrid’s academy went under the radar for a couple of years when Carlo Ancelotti was at the helm of the first team for the Italian coach did not always trust the young and upcoming players.
Xabi Alonso, however, has come in and turned that situation around in a matter of weeks.
The biggest beneficiary of the changed situation in the Spanish capital, needless to say, has been Gonzalo Garcia who was called up to replace Kylian Mbappe and has exceeded all expectations with his numbers.
Garcia has been sensational for the Merengues in the FIFA Club World Cup so far and has earned a place in Xabi Alonso’s plans for the upcoming season. His numbers, in fact, have him brushing shoulders with some of the greats in Real Madrid’s history.
Garcia’s campaign started with a start against Al-Hilal where he scored Real Madrid’s only goal in a 1-1 draw. He provided a crucial assist against Pachuca and rounded up the group stages with a goal against RB Salzburg.

Last night, he scored a great goal to give Real Madrid the win against Juventus and thus continued his great run of form. In fact, he now has four goals in his first ten games for Real Madrid.
That number puts him on level terms with Real Madrid legend Emilio Butragueno who also had four goals in his first ten games for Los Blancos and just one goal behind the legendary Raul Gonzalez at the same juncture.
Garcia’s output, needless to say, reflects his quality but not necessarily what is to come for it will all boil down to his consistency.
The likes of Mariano Diaz, Jose Luis Morales and others have enjoyed equally stunning starts and gone on to fade away but one hopes Garcia follows the path Raul took at the club.
The player was set to leave Real Madrid this summer, but his recent rise has put that plan on hold. He will continue in the Spanish capital this season and he could well end up playing a massive role in Alonso’s plans.
