Real Madrid are six points behind Real Sociedad and Atlético Madrid after they were stunned at home by Alavés on Saturday evening.
Alavés took a surprise early lead after just five minutes, when the first corner of the match resulted in a handball by Nacho. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Lucas Pérez made no mistake from 12-yards.
PĂ©rez then had a great chance to make it 2-0 when he found himself one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois after a long ball forward, but the Real Madrid goalkeeper was able to keep out the strikerâs attempted chip.
Madrid then lost Eden Hazard to injury when he was forced to limp off after 28 minutes.
It went from bad to worse for Zinedine Zidaneâs side when they went 2-0 down early in the second half, and it was a huge blunder from Courtois that gave the goal away.
The goalkeeperâs attempted pass out landed straight at the feet of Joselu, who finished calmly into the gaping goal.
But Courtois did soon come to the rescue again to prevent Alavés from going 3-0 up with a great save to deny Pérez his second goal, before Raphaël Varane made a good block to stop Jota scoring from the rebound.
Madrid then set up a grandstand finish when Casemiro pulled a goal back in the 86th minute, but it was too little, too late.
Los Blancos have a tricky trip to Sevilla coming up next weekend while AlavĂ©s â who move up to 8th in LaLiga â host Real Sociedad next Sunday.
