In the final few days of the summer transfer window, there was a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

Real Betis, for one, appeared intent on signing the 28-year-old Spaniard, who himself was keen on the move, having fallen down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, as it turns out, Betis were not the only club who tried to sign Ceballos late in the summer transfer window.

AS Monaco made a loan move

Indeed, while Real Betis made an offer to purchase 50% of Ceballos’ rights for a fee of around €5 million, AS Monaco also tried to lure him away from Real Madrid.

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Monaco made a move to sign Ceballos from Los Blancos in the final days of August.

As per the report, though, the Ligue 1 club could only offer a loan move for the Spanish international – a formula that Real Madrid shut down quickly.

As was reported, Carlo Ancelotti & co., were always keen on holding on to Ceballos and would let him go only for a sizeable offer close to their demands of around €15-20 million.

With Monaco only proposing a loan move, Real Madrid never entertained that possibility and given Betis’ financial situation, they too were unable to meet the Merengues’ demands.

As such, Ceballos ended up staying put at Real Madrid, although the midfielder is now facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury during their last game, coincidentally against Real Betis.
