Journalist Jose Felix Diaz, writing for MARCA, reports that Real Madrid have set their sights on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz as a key target for the 2025-26 season.

The club has been eyeing Wirtz for quite some time now, but recent assessments have led them to conclude that signing him for the upcoming season would not be prudent due to an overcrowded midfield.

Therefore, Real Madrid have deferred their pursuit to the 2025-26 season. Despite this delay, though, the club has already initiated the groundwork for the potential transfer.

Interestingly, Real Madrid are in a position to afford such luxuries, allowing them to plan ahead.

Laying the groundwork

In the meantime, Madrid are also considering other potential signings like Kylian Mbappe, Endrick, and Alphonso Davies. However, prioritizing these signings does not diminish their interest in Wirtz.

Just like they have done with previous targets such as Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, or Eduardo Camavinga, Real Madrid have planted the seed for Wirtz’s acquisition.

Whether it flourishes or not will be determined with time, but the initial steps have been taken.

Comparisons within the club liken Wirtz’s potential signing to that of Bellingham, indicating a strategic approach led by Jose Angel Sanchez and Juni Calafat, characterized by stealth and patience.

There is a process to follow

Although Real Madrid’s relationship with Bayer Leverkusen is not as deep-rooted as with Borussia Dortmund, there is still a decent rapport, evidenced by past dealings between the clubs.

Securing Wirtz’s signature will undoubtedly be a challenging and costly endeavour, but it aligns with Real Madrid’s long-term goals for the 2025-26 season.

Wirtz, who is contracted with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, represents a significant investment.

However, Real Madrid are prepared to navigate the complexities of negotiations and potential competition from other clubs, like PSG or Manchester City, who might also pursue him.

Ultimately, the success of this operation hinges on Real Madrid’s ability to weather any challenges that may arise during the process.
