Real Madrid rule out signing a new central defender unless there is an exit – report | OneFootball

It’s more than evident that Real Madrid are already planning to reinforce the roster for the next season. For that reason, while several areas have already been earmarked, the centre-back position is one that has been kept on hold for a while.

According to SPORT, Carlo Ancelotti understands the resources he has at the moment in the central defensive department are more than enough. He has as many as five centre-backs at his disposal and considering the continuity of each one of them, there is absolutely no need to bring in the reinforcement.

For the manager, he wants to give each of his central defenders minutes to help them keep up their fitness levels and avoid unnecessary troubles.

Interestingly enough, however, the plans might as well take a hit if a certain Nacho Fernandez decides not to renew his deal with Real Madrid.

The 32-year-old’s contract ends at the end of the season but now that his relevance has diminished since Antonio Rudiger’s arrival, he is assessing his future options.

As for the team, the management expects him to continue for at least another year but the player is still thinking about it.

For now, Eder Militao and David Alaba headline Carlo Ancelotti’s playing XI while Rudiger and Nacho act as cover. Then comes Jesus Vallejo who is his team’s final contingency option at the heart of the defence.

At the same time, the team can also rely on some of their homegrown talents such as Rafa Marin. These are the players who can be utilized in low-intensity games.

Meanwhile, if a defensive reinforcement does arrive, it would be in the wide areas, especially the left-back region where Ferland Mendy is the only natural left-back they have at the moment, which is probably why he is getting regular minutes this season.

So in terms of defence, one can expect Madrid to go for a left-back and potentially a right-back. As far as their centre-backs are concerned, the position is more or less covered.
