Transfer News: Manchester United will need to improve their bid for Raphael Varane

According to transfer news from Spanish publication AS (h/t Sport Witness), Real Madrid are not averse to selling Raphael Varane to Manchester United.

The Red Devils are in need of a new defender and have identified the Frtench international as a priority signing. With his contract set to expire season year, Real too have a decision to make this summer.

As it stands, the Spanish giants have made an offer for the 28-year-old. Rather than reject it, the player’s agents have gotten back to them with a counter-proposal.

This is being seen as a sign that Varane is not completely set on moving. The right offer might still sway his mind heading into the summer.

United for their part are ready to offer €46m for the French international. It pales in comparison to the €70m that Real are seeking. The report goes on to add that Real would welcome a bid that matches their valuation.

Despite being in his prime, the price appars to be inflated, especially given Varane’s contract situation. While United do need a defender, it makes little sense for us to pay over the odds.

While Zinedine Zidane is keen to keep the defender, Real are worried about losing the player for free next year. The best chance of them being able to demand top dollar will be this upcoming summer (h/t The Mirror)

There is a widespread belief at the club that Varane fits the profile of the player we are looking for. Whether the Red Devils will play ball or walk away remains to be seen.

One of the finest defenders in world football, Varane has so far made 359 appearances for Los Blancos. He was also part of the French team that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Currently in his prime, Varane still has a few years to go at his best. Signing him now would give us an excellent foothold to build on for the coming seasons.
