Real Madrid are so desperate to sign a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement this summer that they’re now willing to pay as much as €300m to sign Neymar.
At least, that’s according to Catalan outlet Sport, who claim Los Blancos president Florentino Pérez will make the Brazilian superstar the most expensive player on the planet for a second time, but only if Paris Saint-Germain are punished by UEFA over Financial Fair Play breaches and are forced to sell their most prized asset.
European football’s governing body are currently still investigating PSG about certain sponsorship deals which are alleged to be two or even three times above market value.
UEFA’s appeals committee will make a final decision at the end of August and while the French champions are said to be confident that they won’t face further sanctions, it’s impossible to completely rule it out.
And if they are punished, Madrid will reportedly be ready and waiting to step in with a bid for Neymar which would be impossible to turn down.
The European champions are yet to make a marquee signing to replace Ronaldo and with under two weeks to go until the Spanish transfer window closes, it seemed likely Julen Lopetegui would have to work with what he has.
But last week’s 4-2 UEFA Super Cup defeat at the hands of Atlético is said to have caused concern among the club’s hierarchy, and there could be a frantic fortnight of transfer activity ahead.
Sport claim Madrid want a new striker, a central defender and a left-back.
Mauro Icardi, Robert Lewandowski, Rodrigo and Timo Werner are some of the potential striking options, while Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso – who began his career at the Bernabéu – has been touted by the Guardian as a possible defensive target.
